Training Tip of the Month
September 2003
This month we continue our series on tips and techniques for trainers, presenters and facilitators, and for those who perform those tasks only occasionally. These behind-the-scenes ideas will help you operate in a faster, better, more cost-effective way.
When running a meeting, take along a basic facilitation kit, even if you are assured the department or client has “everything.” You never know when you will be stuck without the basics. I pack supplies in a plastic sealable bag, and then throw the bag in my briefcase. The supplies I always have on hand include:
- Three chisel tip markers - black, blue and green
- A roll of blue painter’s tape – for hanging flipcharts for reference
- A few index cards – great for individual brainstorming
- A few stick-on name badges – for unexpected guests
- Several rubber bands – for fastening rolled up flipcharts
- Some paper clips – can be used to mark flipchart pages for easy access
- A package of sticky notes – for quick flowcharting, affinity charting, etc.
- A little bottle of hand disinfectant – when you can’t get to soap and water
- A small stack of business cards – for marketing and for leveling a projector!

Note: If you have a training tip you would like to tell us about, please submit it by e-mailing NorthStar at info@northstarconsulting.com . If yours is selected, you will receive a gift compliments of NorthStar Consulting Group.
