Training Tip of the Month
SUPPORTING TRANSFER OF LEARNING
Last month we explored the steps managers can take to support team members in the learning process before the learning event. Now let’s take a look at what leaders can do to support the transfer of learning to the workplace after the learning event. Consider these possibilities:
- Ask learners to summarize the major learning points of the developmental activity, using their preferred communication style (written or oral).
- Where appropriate, ask learners to provide an overview of relevant information to peers at the next team meeting.
- Ask learners how, specifically, they will apply their learning on the job.
- Ask learners how you as their manager or supervisor can help them implement their action plan.
- Acknowledge learners’ efforts to apply their learning on the job, as well as their positive results.
- Follow up with learners in six weeks to check their progress, success and challenges in applying their learning. Offer continued support.
Here’s to successful learning transfer!
